In the first phase, the part of the Connolly Canal from Arayidathupalam to Eranhipalam will be developed. | Photo Credit: File photo for representational purposes The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has sanctioned ₹73.21 crore for the first phase of works to develop Connolly Canal in Kozhikode city under the ‘Canal City’ project. A release said on Saturday (February 14) that the amount was approved at a KIIFB meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday (February 13). In the first phase, the part of the Connolly Canal from Arayidathupalam to Eranhipalam would be developed. Along with this, a sum of ₹166.55 crore was sanctioned for the Pavangad-Ulliyeri-Kuttiyadi-Chovva road development. The first phase of this work would include the development of the 17.2 km stretch of road from Pavangad to Ulliyeri. For this, ₹82.36 crore had been sanctioned by KIIFB. Road-widening works are at present going on here. Drainages, carriage way, footpath, and a utility corridor are the other facilities being provided. In the second phase, the stretch of road from Ulliyeri to Kuttiyadi would be developed. A sum of ₹168 crore had been sanctioned by KIIFB for the purpose. Land acquisition would soon begin, the release added. Meanwhile, Minister for Public Works and Tourism P.A. Mohamed Riyas said in a statement that water transport, goods movement, and tourism would be developed under the ‘Canal City’ project. The development of the Pavangad-Ulliyeri-Kuttiyadi-Chovva road would address the travel concerns of the residents, he added.
