Cyberabad Police organises first-of-its-kind ‘Defreeze Accounts Mela’

In a maiden initiative, the Cyberabad Police organised a special ‘Defreeze Accounts Mela’ at the commissionerate auditorium on Saturday, February 14, 2026, where No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) were handed over to bank account holders whose accounts had been frozen during cyber fraud investigations.

The initiative was aimed at providing relief to genuine account holders whose accounts were frozen as a precautionary measure during ongoing cybercrime probes. In cyber fraud cases, victims are advised to immediately report incidents by dialling the 1930 helpline or by lodging complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Based on such complaints, suspected beneficiary bank accounts are promptly identified and frozen to prevent further diversion of defrauded funds and to safeguard victims’ money.

Addressing the gathering, Cyber Crimes DCP T. Sai Manohar explained that freezing of bank accounts is a necessary step in investigating cyber fraud as it has been observed that some accounts were flagged due to transactional links even though the holders were not directly involved in fraudulent activities. To address the grievances of such individuals and ensure prompt redressal, the wing carried out a focused verification exercise.

Nearly 110 bank accounts that had been frozen through the National Cyber Crime Portal (NCRP) were examined. Detailed verification of account holders, scrutiny of transaction histories and analysis of supporting documents were carried out. Those found to have no role in criminal activity were cleared and their accounts were defrozen after due legal procedure. The DCP said the initiative ensured timely relief to innocent citizens while enabling investigators to concentrate on organised cyber offenders.

Apart from handing over NOCs, police also organised an awareness programme for attendees about safe banking practices and precautions to prevent misuse of their accounts.

The police cautioned the public against sharing bank account details, passwords, OTPs or personal information with unknown persons and advised caution while responding to suspicious calls, messages or online offers.
