A vehicle operator who attempted to dump waste along the bund of the Kalingarayan Canal late on Friday (February 13, 2026) was fined ₹3,000 by Corporation officials here on Saturday (February 14, 2026).

A tar-topped road runs along the canal bund from Cauvery Road near the checkpost in Karungalpalayam and is used by more than 400 families in the locality. However, residents had repeatedly complained about garbage being dumped along the stretch, particularly during night hours.

Acting on the complaints, Public Works Department officials recently installed iron poles and a chain at the entrance of the road leading to the canal bund to regulate access. The public were allowed to use the road between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., with plans to restrict movement at night. Following objections from residents, the move to close the road was kept in abeyance. Residents also demanded that the potholed stretch be repaired and said they had begun monitoring the area at night.

Around 12 a.m. on Saturday, a goods van reportedly arrived from Pallipalayam in Namakkal district. Alert residents intercepted the vehicle and informed Corporation officials. On inspection, officials found six bags containing textile and medical waste in the vehicle. The van was seized and taken to the zonal office, and a fine was imposed for attempting to dump waste near the waterbody.
