The Kalaburagi Central Prison. Director-General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar has ordered a probe into the viral video allegedly showing inmates indulging in gambling, smoking and consuming alcohol inside Kalaburagi Central Prison, and said that he will personally visit the jail to review the situation and identify lapses. According to a press release issued by the Prisons and Correctional Services Department, a case has been registered against four inmates in connection with the incident with the Farhatabad police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The media release noted that preliminary findings suggested that the incident captured in the video had occurred around two to three months ago. One of the inmates allegedly involved, Munikrishna alias Kappe, a resident of Bengaluru, was released from Kalaburagi Central Prison on December 2, 2025, the press note said. In view of the seriousness of the allegations, Mr. Alok Kumar has asked Additional Inspector-General of Prisons P.V. Anand Reddy to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the incident as well as other allegations related to the functioning of the prison. The inquiry is scheduled to commence on Friday. The release also stated that the DGP would visit Kalaburagi Central Prison on Saturday to ascertain the facts and examine any administrative or supervisory lapses that may have led to the incident. “Such incidents are unfortunate and completely unacceptable. Even though the video appears to be two to three months old, allowing such activities inside a prison is a matter of serious concern. To fix responsibility in this regard, an inquiry has been ordered and will be conducted by the Additional Inspector-General of Prisons. I will also personally visit the Kalaburagi Central Prison to ascertain the facts and identify any lapses,” Mr. Alok Kumar told The Hindu. The development comes a day after videos allegedly showing inmates indulging in gambling and consuming alcohol inside the prison surfaced online, triggering public outrage and drawing comparisons with past controversies at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara prison.
