The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by its chairman Tarique Rahman has got an absolute majority in the parliamentary election of February 12, the latest official update issued by the Election Commission of Bangaldesh has announced. As per the latest report, the BNP-led alliance has secured 212 seats, a two-thirds majority, in the Parliament and the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has won 77 seats. The election was seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami, in the absence of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina’s now debarred Awami League. The BNP was in power last time between 2001 and 2006 when Jamaat was its crucial partner, with two of its leaders serving as ministers.
