The Udupi police have seized 315 units of sand worth ₹ 8.5 lakh illegally extracted from Varahi river bed in Molahalli village of Kundapura taluk of Udupi district. A team led by Kota Police Sub-Inspector R. Praveen Kumar raided the place and seized the illegally extracted sand. The police also seized three fibre boats and other articles used for sand extraction. The Kota police registered a case against 22 persons namely Devanand Shetty, Amaresh, Krupal, Parashuram, Prabeen, Ramcharan, Satrohan, Ram Avatar, Bimalesh, Ramalal, Bhola, Sanjay, Hriday Ram, Sarvan, Mukesh, Karan, Prince, Kishon, Suraj, Neraj, Kallu and Rajeev. They were booked for offences punishable under Section 303 (2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 4, 4(1A) and 21 of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
