Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu presented gifts to 300 expectant mothers during community baby shower organised at Lebbaikudiyiruppu near Valliyoor in the district on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Appavu said Tamil Nadu Government was giving nutritious food and medicines, doing regular check-up and giving guidance to the expectant mothers by qualified doctors and nurses when they are pregnant to ensure the birth of healthy babies. Moreover, the government is organising community baby shower in every taluk of the State to reaffirm its commitment that the government is with them.

Besides giving the gifts of bangles, fruits, turmeric, kumkum and sweets, the pregnant women are being served five varieties of rice during this celebration as being done during the baby shower celebrations in the families.

In Tirunelveli district, 6,542 pregnant women and 7,226 feeding mothers were being regularly taken care of by the doctors and nurses of Department of Public Health so as to ensure good health of the mothers and their babies, the Speaker said.

District Revenue Officer M. Durai, Project Officer of Integrated Child Development Scheme Dhanalakshmi, District Social Welfare Officer Thajunniza Begum and others participated.
