The police have registered a case against two siblings on charge of murdering a 49-year-old man near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district late on Thursday.

M. Nagaraj (32) and his brother M. Alagaraja (30), residents of Arivoli Nagar near Madukkarai, were booked for murdering S. Nagaraj from the same locality.

A quarrel arose between Alagaraja’s wife and his mother around 11 p.m. on Thursday, following which the latter informed her elder son Nagaraj over the phone. Nagaraj came to the spot and questioned Alagaraja’s wife, which resulted in a heated verbal altercation.

According to the police, the victim Nagaraj’s wife, Vijayalakshmi, intervened in the altercation as a neighbour and spoke in support of Alagaraja’s wife. Accused Nagaraj objected to her interference and allegedly assaulted her.

The victim, who was also present at the spot, questioned the accused for assaulting Vijayalakshmi, resulting in a quarrel between them.

In the ensuing quarrel, accused Nagaraj picked up a log and bludgeoned the victim, while Alagaraja punched him on his chest. The man suffered bleeding injuries and fell unconscious. Though he was rushed to nearby hospitals and later to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.

The Madukkarai police rushed to the scene of crime and shifted Nagaraj’s body for post-mortem examination. A police officer attached to Madukkarai police station said the siblings were not arrested as of Friday evening.
