Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday declared open, through video conferencing, the multipurpose hall constructed in memory of Tamil language martyr Keelapalur Chinnasamy, who sacrificed his life for the protection of Tamil and fought against the imposition of Hindi at his home town near here.

As a mark of remembering his sacrifice, the State government allotted a piece of land and sanctioned ₹3 crore to build a multipurpose hall. The construction began in November 2023. The can accommodate 500 people with provisions for vehicle parking and dining. It has a provision to display the life of Chinnasamy.

Soon after the inauguration, Minister for Transport and Electricity S.S. Sivasankar, MLAs K. Chinnappa and KS.K. Ganesan and senior officials participated.

Kamalam, 85, wife of Chinnasamy, who died on January 25 in 1964 during anti-Hindi agitation, and his daughter Dravidamani, were special guests. They were felicitated on the occasion.

Muthuswamy statue

Mr.Stalin also unveiled a statue of former Member of Parliament and former member of Cauvery Retrieval Committee C. Muthusamy, who worked for the rights of farmers and staged several protests, at Vairamadai near Karur. The bronze statue was installed at a cost of ₹50 lakh. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin laid the foundation stone in July 2025.

Born at Nochikattuvalasu near Monjanur in Karur district on October 16, 1917, Muthusamy was elected to Parliament in 1967 from Karur constituency. He had participated in a number of protests in support of the farmers. Muthusamy died on November 16, 1990.
