On New Year’s day, the Health department kicked off a major campaign aimed at encouraging people to embrace the wellness journey by pledging to adopt good dietary habits, sleep adequately, exercise moderately and take self care seriously.

The campaign, named ‘Anandam, Arogyam – Vibe 4 Wellness’, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday.

Inaugurating the campaign, Mr. Vijayan said that the face of public health had changed in Kerala and that the changes in physical infrastructure, healthcare service delivery and accessibility to modern medical treatment was there for all to see.

The rise in non communicable diseases was a challenge that the State had to tackle head on and this required people to adopt healthier lifestyle habits. Many people take New Year resolutions and this New Year, the Health department would like everyone to resolve themselves to begin the wellness journey, he said.

The campaign focuses on creating awareness on the essential changes in lifestyle — good dietary habits, moderate and regular physical activity, good sleep and self care — and encourage people to take the path of wellness

Awareness programmes are being organised targeting school and college students, youth, elderly, food vloggers, fitness clubs, hotels and clubs too

The department plans to coordinate with the 10,000 yoga clubs under Ayush department and to create awareness through the 5,416 Janakeeya Arogya Kendras (former sub centres) so that people have the right information on what constitutes a good diet and the importance of physical activity

The Health department said that over 10 lakh people were participating in the campaign across the State. At the Central stadium, various events were organised, including zumba dance, yoga aerobics, sessions on dietary habits, free diet counselling and awareness classes on sleep hygiene and the importance of mental health
