The State Registration department will observe January 4 as Registration Day every year, with the first State-level celebrations to be held on January 4 at the Anjarakandy Higher Secondary School, Registration Minister Ramachandran Kadannappally said on Tuesday (December 30).

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the event at 10 a.m. The Registration Day is being observed as part of the 160th anniversary of the department. The first registration system in the country was established at Anjarakandy in Kannur in 1865 by British official Murdoch Brown in connection with the registration of a cinnamon plantation.

Records show that the first registration under the system took place on January 4, 1867, prompting the government to choose the date for annual observance.

As part of the celebrations, awards will be presented to sub-registrar offices, district registrar offices, chit offices, and regional offices in each district for outstanding service.

District panchayat president Binoy Kurian, Registration North Region Deputy Inspector General Rajesh Gopalan, and others were present.
