Deputy Inspector General, Visakha Range, Gopinath Jetti on Thursday (February 12) said the police secured 98 convictions in 52 ganja-related cases since June 2024. Properties worth ₹9,19,17,290, belonging to 14 ganja smugglers, have been seized and history sheets opened on 1,602 accused to monitor their movements. Proposals have been submitted to invoke the PIT NDPS Act against 92 accused. Mr. Jatti was speaking to police officers from Alluri Sitarama Raju, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram-Manyam and Srikakulam districts during a review meeting in a video conference. He said 64 special teams had been formed, which apprehended 447 accused on the run and 332 accused with non-bailable warrants against them and produced them before courts. SPs, Additional SPs and SDPOs were instructed to prepare comprehensive plans to dismantle interstate ganja smuggling networks and take stringent action against such gangs. During the meeting, Mr. Gopinath also instructed the officers to ensure a smooth conduct of Sivaratri celebrations at temples. He asked them to personally visit major temples and, in coordination with other departments, identify entry and exit routes and emergency exits; devise traffic diversion plans; find out parking areas; and make proper bandobast arrangements. He also directed them to monitor the festivities using using CCTV cameras and drones. He also reviewed the cybercrime cases and directed the officials to ensure that frozen amounts in the banks are returned to the victims after obtaining court permissions. To reduce road accidents, the DIG stressed the need for strict enforcement of traffic laws and prevention of drunk driving.
