A police constable was sentenced to five years in jail and fined ₹1,000 for physically assaulting and abusing an on-duty head constable by his caste name.

The accused, Polugalla Narendra (33), hailing from Rajupalem mandal in Kadapa district and currently serving at Proddatur traffic police station, was accused of barging into the Duvvur police station on October 24, 2018, and engaging in a fight with a head constable over a consecutive three-day duty assignment.

Nagendra was accused of kicking the head constable with his boots and abusing him by his caste name during the fight. When accosted by sentry beat constables in the station, Narendra fled the spot. A case was filed in the Duvvur police station and the then Sub Divisional Police Officer B.R. Srinivasulu conducted an inquiry and filed the charge sheet under sections 323, 355 IPC and Sec (3) (i), (X) SC/ST Act.

The Kadapa IV Additional District Judge G. Deena Babu, who handles the SC/ST Atrocities cases, passed the verdict on Thursday
