Following the detection of the H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) virus in samples collected from a dead crow in Chennai, District Collector Kandasamy has issued a public health advisory urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to precautionary measures. In a press release, the Collector stated that bird flu is a viral disease that primarily spreads among birds. The infection is generally identified through laboratory test of dead birds, as it spreads from infected birds to others, leading to mortality. He clarified that transmission of the disease to humans is very rare. However, symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat and body pain may appear in suspected cases. The disease may spread to humans through direct contact with infected birds or under unhygienic conditions. The district administration has issued the following guidelines to the public: Individuals experiencing influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms such as cough, cold, fever and breathing difficulty are advised to seek immediate medical attention. Those handling birds, particularly sick or dead birds, as well as workers in meat stalls, are urged to exercise caution. If flu-like symptoms develop, they should consult the nearest Government Primary Health Centre, Government Hospital or Government Medical College Hospital. Any unusual bird deaths must be reported immediately to the Department of Animal Husbandry. The public is advised to maintain personal hygiene, including regular handwashing, and to ensure clean surroundings. Consumption of raw or undercooked eggs and meat should be strictly avoided. People are also advised to refrain from visiting areas affected by bird flu. The Collector has appealed to the public not to believe or spread rumours regarding the disease.
