Aimed at addressing an acute drinking water crisis in Erattupetta municipality in Kottayam district, a drinking water project under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) project is set to be implemented soon. The ₹20.5-crore project, being implemented in partnership with the Central and State governments, will be executed by the Kerala Water Authority. This is the first project in the municipality that aims to supply purified drinking water. As part of the project, a 39-km-long water supply pipeline will be installed. In the first phase, the pipeline will be installed in wards seven to 20 of the municipality and in the second phase, in the remaining areas. The scheme will also provide 1,500 new domestic drinking water connections. Water treatment plant According to officials, the municipality’s water supply will be sourced from the water treatment plant under construction in Neelur, as part of the Meenachil Malankara project, which aims to provide drinking water in 13 panchayats through the Jal Jeevan Mission. In this project, water is transported from Neelur to a surface water reservoir in Vettiparambu. The AMRUT project plans to divert water from this line at the Thevarupara junction and channel it to a 10 lakh-litre storage capacity tank to be constructed at Thevarupara, from where it will be distributed to various parts of the municipality. The project is envisaged in such a way that the Union government will bear 50% of the cost, the State government 37.5% and the municipality 12.5% each.
