The Supreme Court has turned down the bail petition of Raj Kesireddy, the main accused in the alleged ₹3,200-crore liquor scam.

Hearing the plea a few days ago, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said that Mr. Raj was a main conspirator and he could at best make out a case for cancellation of the bail granted to others.

The CJI observed that Mr. Raj was not an ordinary person and that he held a position of power, hence he could not compare himself with the other accused.

The court observed that corruption of such magnitude was not possible without a criminal nexus between bureaucrats and political leaders.

Also, the CJI stated that, having taken a serious view of the allegations, he would neither give bail nor serve notices in the case.

He granted liberty to the petitioner to approach the trial court, or the Andhra Pradesh High Court at an appropriate stage in exercise of his legal remedies.
