The students association of the University of agricultural Sciences in Dharwad cancelled the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected student body following protests by Dalit organisations against the invitation extended to Yuva Brigade founder Chakravarthy Sulibele.

The event was scheduled for Tuesday. But Dalit Sangharsh Samiti leaders protested against it. Police took them into custody but released them later.

DSS convenor Parameshwar Kale told reporters in Dharwad on Wednesday that he and other leaders protested as Mr. Sulibele is known for his vitriolic speeches that can affect the harmony of the university and Dharwad city.

Also, what has Mr. Sulibele got to do with a farm university? Is he an academician or an agricultural scientist? Why should anyone invite him for a function in UAS-Dharwad? he asked.

Krishna Gummagol and other leaders led the protest.

Vice-Chancellor P.L. Patil said that the event was organised by the students association and not the university. The association extended the invitations. “The event has been cancelled due to the opposition,” he said.
