In a noble gesture, the family of K. Vijay Kumar, an engineering student who was declared brain dead while undergoing treatment at Manipal Hospitals in Vijayawada on Wednesday, consented to donate his organs, offering a new lease of life to several critically ill patients.

Vijay Kumar, a student of KL University and a native of Madhira in Khammam district of Telangana, met with an accident near the DMart store in Tadepalli. He was shifted to Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada, in a critical condition on February 6 and was immediately provided advanced critical care, according to a hospital release.

Despite the best medical efforts, his neurological condition continued to deteriorate and he was declared brain dead on Wednesday. In a humanitarian gesture, the family agreed to organ donation.

The donor’s heart and liver were transplanted at Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada. Two kidneys were sent to Vidhata Hospital in Guntur, the lungs to KIMS in Hyderabad, and the corneas to LV Prasad Eye Hospital in Vijayawada, benefiting multiple patients in need.

The organ retrieval process was carried out in accordance with established medical and legal protocols, the release added.
