BALACHANDAR Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital through its sophisticated equipment and specialists has performed three advanced oncological surgeries in the recent days. Speaking on the significant progression towards a world-class treatment, R. Amutha Rani, Dean of the Ramanathapuram GH here on Wednesday, said, “Advanced cancer treatments have been initiated at the Ramanathapuram GH involving specialised surgical oncologists. Under the leadership of Surgical Oncologist Ganesh Babu, a team consisting of oncologists Nithya Priyadarshini, Muneeswarapandiyan, and Sibi Krishnan, in coordination with general surgeons, achieved a milestone last week by performing surgery on a 55-year-old man for soft tissue sarcoma in his thigh. The patient has recovered well and returned home.” Next, a 47-year-old woman was diagnosed with cervical cancer. While she was prepared to travel to Chennai for treatment, the surgery was instead performed here, and the patient is doing well, she added. Similarly, a rectal cancer surgery was performed for a 65-year-old man. These patients have received treatment and returned home in good health, she added. Dr. Amutha Rani said, “High-quality treatment for all types of cancer is provided here free of cost. Chemotherapy treatment is also being provided.” Through the available facilities people in and around the district could avail critical treatment for cancer in the district GH itself, she informed. Also, to upgrade the facility, foundation stone for the radiation therapy building has been laid, and work was currently underway. “This treatment will also commence within a year. Presently, only patients requiring radiation therapy are being sent to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital,” she noted. As generally women over the age of 40 should undergo breast cancer screenings the facilities for the purpose are available right here, she stated.
