Ariyalur police have reached out to female students of various colleges in the district to ascertain their concerns regarding safety and security and instil confidence in them.

The exercise has been rolled out under the ‘Police Akka’ initiative that was launched recently in the district. Under the initiative, a team of eight women constables have been nominated as ‘Police Akka’ and they would visit colleges in their respective jurisdiction periodically.

During their weekly visits, they would meet the head of the college, some faculty members and students and interact with them. Their task would be to ascertain from the students if they faced any issues concerning their safety such as eve teasing and sexual harassment with the aim of creating a safe, secure and supportive environment for them, said police sources.

The women constables would also sensitise the students about the ‘Kaaval Uthavi’ app, which they could install in their mobile phones to alert the police in case they faced any issues concerning their safety and security.

Under the initiative, 18 colleges would be covered by the women constables who would provide their mobile numbers to the students to contact them whenever required. Each woman constable would create a Whatsapp group comprising select students. Another Whatsapp group would be created comprising women constables, senior officers and Superintendent of Police, Ariyalur, Vishwesh. B. Shastri who would monitor the initiative time to time.
