A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the death of a 16-year-old girl at Chottanikkara even as the mystery over a suspected ‘Korean link’ behind the alleged suicide remains unsolved.

The Plus One student, who was found dead in a water-filled quarry at Chottanikkara on January 27, had left behind a note saying that she chose to take the extreme step as she was unable to bear the grief over the death of a Korean friend she had met on Instagram.

District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) K.S. Sudarshan formed the SIT after the deceased girl’s family alleged lapses in the investigation. “The investigation will be carried out by the SIT led by the Chottanikkara Station House Officer under the supervision of the Puthecruz Deputy Superintendent of Police. The seven-member team has been constituted with cyber experts too,” Mr. Sudarshan said.

The primary task of the SIT, according to sources, will be to establish if the ‘Korean friend’ the girl mentioned is a genuine person or not. The police are also looking into the possibility of someone cheating the girl with a fake identity.
