Centre has initiated process to accord permanent capital status to Amaravati, says Andhra Pradesh Governor Abdul Nazeer

Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer has said the Union government has initiated the process to accord permanent capital status to Amaravati through a legislation.

Addressing a joint session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature on the inaugural day of the Budget Session on Wednesday, Mr. Nazeer said, “In a significant step towards long-term certainty, the Union government has initiated the process to introduce a legislation to accord statutory status to Amaravati as the permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh.”

The proposed legislation was expected to bring legal clarity and institutional stability to the status of the greenfield capital city, reinforcing investor confidence and ensuring continuity in governance and infrastructure development, the Governor observed. “The step is being seen as a crucial milestone in the State’s efforts to rebuild Amaravati with renewed momentum,” he said.

Backed by the financial closure of key infrastructure projects and with the support of the Union government, the construction and development works in Amaravati gathered pace in recent months, he said. “Substantial progress has also been made in land pooling, with transparent and technology-enabled processes helping to reaffirm the trust of the farmers who voluntarily contributed land for the capital city project,” he added.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the State government was also charting an ambitious roadmap to position Amaravati as a hub for emerging technologies, the Governor said.

“Artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing have been identified as key drivers of the next phase of economic transformation, with the potential to generate a trillion-dollar economy,” he said.

Comparing it with the Information Technology revolution that had transformed Hyderabad into a global IT hub in the 1990s, he said the State government envisioned Amaravati as a centre for AI and quantum technologies.

“By building skilled talent, creating future-ready infrastructure, and adopting forward-looking policies, Andhra Pradesh aims to define a new growth trajectory that goes beyond conventional economic pathways,” the Governor observed.
