GUWAHATI

For the second time in less than 10 days, the administration in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district has ordered three people deemed non-citizens to leave India.

On February 10, District Commissioner Aranyak Saikia asked the trio — Md Tajuddin, Md Khurshed Ali, and Md Amir Hussain — to quit Assam and India within 24 hours of receiving the notice individually. The three were declared foreigners by a Foreigners’ Tribunal in the district.

All three live in villages under the Khatkhati police station in the district. The Foreigners’ Tribunal cases were filed against them in 2008 and 2009.

Citing Section 2 of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, the orders state that their continued presence in India was detrimental to the interests of the general public and the internal security of Assam.

The trio was instructed to exit the country through the Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, or Sribhumi border routes. The first two routes are in western Assam, and the third is in southern Assam.

The administration warned of appropriate action in case of non-compliance. The relevant authorities were directed to confiscate any movable or immovable property of the three declared foreigners in favour of the government, delete their names from the voters’ list, freeze their Aadhaar cards, and exclude them from government social security schemes and grants.

A similar order was issued against Md Faizul Haque, Md Fakaruddin, and Md Rafiqul Ali on February 2. Their whereabouts are not known.

Such notices have been served on many declared foreigners in Assam since mid-2025, when Assam Chief Minister said that the State government would follow the 1950 Act to fast-track the detection and deportation of “illegal immigrants” instead of going through a long legal process.
