Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who was arrested on Friday night in a 31-year-old forgery case, was granted bail by an MP/MLA court on Tuesday.

Advocate Shivnandan Bharti, who appeared for the MP, told reporters: “Pappu Yadav has been granted bail in the 1995 case. However, he will remain in custody as another case was filed on the same day against him for allegedly obstructing police work.”

‘Obstructing police’

Mr. Bharti claimed that the police “conspired” to file a case accusing the MP of obstructing police work even though he had “offered himself for arrest after seeing the warrant”.

The hearing for bail plea was originally scheduled for Monday. However, it could not be taken up as judicial work in the court was suspended due to a bomb threat.

Mr. Yadav was first taken to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for medical tests. He was later sent to Beur jail in Patna and from there produced before the court on February 10, when he was granted bail in the case.
