Principal District and Sessions Judge Manjunath G.A. has expressed concern over the continued existence of the inhumane bonded labour system, even decades after the law to abolish it was passed.

Speaking after inaugurating a workshop to mark Bonded Labour Abolition Day in Shivamogga on Tuesday, Mr. Manjunath stated that the bonded labour system is a painful reality and a shame on civilised society. The law to abolish the practice was passed in 1976; however, it continues in many places. “There are instances that show the prevalence of the system in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Bidar, and other locations. More than 8,800 cases related to the practice are pending in courts,” he said.

Making workers toil for long hours without fair wages is an inhumane act. This practice has continued due to poverty, illiteracy, debt traps, and a lack of awareness among people, he pointed out. He also suggested that the officers work honestly to put an end to this system.

The District Legal Services Authority member-secretary, M.S. Santhosh, said, “It is encouraging that bonded-labour-related cases have not been reported in Shivamogga over the past decade.” He added that although the law to abolish the system was passed 50 years ago, it is depressing that it continues in many parts of the country.

S. Ramesh Kumar, Additional SP, Additional DC Abhishek V. and others were present at the programme.
