Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, led by Andhra Pradesh unit president P. V. N. Madhav, welcomed the party’s victorious corporators from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, at the Vijayawada railway station on Tuesday. The corporators were travelling to New Delhi by the Kerala Express to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had invited all 56 members.

Mr. Madhav described the BJP’s victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation as a historic landmark. He alleged that nationalist forces had endured decades of violence in Kerala under Left Democratic Front rule, including the killing of 76 BJP workers and the jailing of hundreds. He said Mayor V. V. Rajesh had survived two assassination attempts, while Deputy Mayor Asha had faced repeated attacks despite being a woman.

Andhra Pradesh BJP cadres raised slogans hailing the Kerala leaders and hosted a reception. Party leaders also accused the Kerala government of failing to protect the sanctity of Sabarimala and of lapses in cases related to gold smuggling.
