The upcoming God of War series at Amazon Prime Video has added a key piece to its ensemble, casting Callum Vinson as Atreus, a central character of the acclaimed video game franchise. Vinson will star opposite Ryan Hurst, who takes on the role of Kratos, the fearsome Spartan warrior navigating fatherhood amid the brutal world of Norse mythology.

Atreus is one of the most significant figures in the modern God of War storyline. Introduced in the 2018 PlayStation game, the character is a young boy raised in isolation by his mother, Faye, and an emotionally distant father. Following Faye’s death, Atreus embarks on a perilous journey with Kratos to fulfil her final wish, a quest that forms the emotional backbone of the story. Curious, compassionate and eager to prove himself, Atreus contrasts sharply with his father’s hardened exterior.

Vinson has steadily built a résumé in high-profile television projects. He previously appeared in Peacock’s Long Bright River and Amazon’s Dead Ringers, and is set to feature in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s The Night Agent. He will also appear in Peacock’s Crystal Lake, the prequel series inspired by the Friday the 13th franchise.

The series’ supporting cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Jeff Gulka and Danny Woodburn as the dwarf brothers Sindri and Brok.

Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first two episodes. The adaptation is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

The series has received a two-season order, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver.
