The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) in Mysuru will hold a silent black robes demonstration in the city on January 1 to condemn the recent ‘honour killing’ in Dharwad district. Referring to reports on the death of 19-year-old Manya allegedly at the hands of her father and his supporters in Inam Veerapur village of Dharwad district, PUCL Mysuru president Kamal Gopinath and general secretary V. Purushottam condemned the “killing in the name of disgustingly shameful honour based on medieval yet still hugely prevalent notions of caste superiority”. A silent black robes protest will be held on January 1 between 5 and 6.30 p.m. at Gandhi Square here by people’s action groups and civil organisations such as PUCL, Karnataka Forum Against Atrocities on Women, Samatha Vedike, Samatha Adhyayana Kendra, Odanadi Seva Trust, All India Mahila Samskritik Sanghatan, and Dwanai Mahila Okkuta, said a statement by PUCL. In its statement, PUCL has requested all like-minded citizens to participate in the protest in support of action against those perpetrating atrocities against women.
