Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University organised a special lecture on Gandhian Thought in Gadag on Wednesday. Theatre personality and Khadi promoter Heggodu Prasanna delivered the lecture.

Mr. Prasanna said that the university should become a centre for creating youth enthusiastic about rural development.

He said that the students here should not just be graduates but they should become energetic workers who will usher in a transformation of rural society.

He explained that philosophy, ethics and a spirit of service are necessary for rural development and Gandhian thoughts clearly provide these values. He praised the academic and social activities of the university.

Secretary of the Bangalore Gandhi Memorial Fund G.B. Shivaraju said that Gandhi’s principles are not to be relegated to history but to be seen as a beacon for the problems of today’s society.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Suresh V. Nadagouda said that Gandhi’s thoughts are very relevant to today’s rural development and social transformation.

He said that the university is working to integrate Gandhian principles with academic activities and community-based programs.

“Students should not limit Gandhian thoughts to studies only but they should also use them practically to solve problems faced by the rural folk,” he said.

Convenor of Sabarmati Ashram Prakash Machenahalli, Special Officer (Academic) M.B. Chennappagoudar, Assistant Director, Research and Development, Girish Dixit, faculty members and students of the MBA Department and B.Sc Agri Business Department were present, according to a release.
