Minister launches breakfast scheme for sanitation workers in Sivaganga

In a significant move to boost the welfare of frontline workers, Minister for Cooperation, KR. Periakaruppan, officially launched breakfast scheme for sanitation workers across the Sivaganga district here on Monday.

The initiative is part of a Statewide rollout inaugurated via video conferencing by the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The scheme is designed to provide nutritious meals to both permanent and contract-based sanitation staff working in Corporations, Municipalities, and Town Panchayats.

Speaking at the event held in Karaikudi, Mr. Periakaruppan highlighting the government’s commitment to the workers who maintain public hygiene, said, “Our Chief Minister continues to lead as a role model for other States.”

He recalled that the foundation for these efforts was laid in 2007 with the establishment of the Sanitation Workers Welfare Board, which provided essential support ranging from educational scholarships to maternity aid and housing.

The scheme, which originally debuted as a pilot program in Chennai last November, now expands its reach. In Sivaganga district alone, 1,840 workers will benefit from the program.The beneficiary list includes a wide range of personnel:

The scheme would permanent and contract staff; dengue prevention workers and school campus cleaners; public health vehicle drivers and supervisors.

As part of the launch, Mr. Periakaruppan also distributed tiffin boxes to all eligible workers to facilitate the meal service.

He directed the departmental officials to ensure the quality and quantity of the food remain consistent. “There must be no deficiency in the service provided to those who keep our surroundings clean,” he emphasised.

District Collector K. Porkodi, among others were present during the event.

Similarly, in Ramanathapuram district, MLA Katharbatcha Muthuramalingam along with District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon launched the scheme in the district for sanitation workers.
