Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said that the government would look into the demand for establishing a tribal university in the State.

Speaking to presspersons at Rajanahalli Sri Maharshmi Valmiki Guru Peetha, near Harihar, on Monday, the Chief Minister said that after verification an appropriate decision would be taken.

The Chief Minister’s reply has rekindled the hope of establishment of separate university for studying tribal culture.

In fact in 2017, the Department of Kannada and Culture had proposed the tribal university in order to encourage further studies and research on tribal communities and subsequently the State government had asked the Department of Higher Education to initiate the process.

However in December 2022, the Karnataka State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) under Department of Higher Education, rejected the proposal at its general body meeting.

The meeting had favoured offering courses or subjects related to tribal studies at the existing Janapada (Folklore) University and other State-run universities.
