Sukumar to give them the free laptops, the third year students of 5-year integrated courses being offered by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) and the students of D.Pharm submitted petitions during the weekly grievances redressal meeting held at the Collectorate on Monduay. The petitioner students said all third year students of MSU, who were doing their undergraduate programmes in the University, had received the free laptops while the third year students of 5-year integrated programmes and D.Pharm had been left-out from getting from the freebee. Since these students were also in need of laptops for their curriculum, laboratory activities, doing the projects and understand the latest developments in their respective fields, the free laptops would be of great help to these students, particularly for the students from poor families who were unable to afford to buy the laptop. Hence, the Collector should take necessary steps to distribute free laptops to these students also, they prayed. A group of villagers from A. Sattankulam under Nanguneri taluk submitted a petition expressing grave concern over the plan to open TASMAC’s liquor shop in their hamlet. The petitioner villagers said the proposed liquor shop would permanently dent peace the villagers were now enjoying with the liquor-induced crimes increasing against the public, especially against the women and the children. Hence, the District Collector should instruct the TASMAC authorities to drop the plan to open the liquor shop in A. Sattankulam, said its village panchayat president S. Kovilpitchai. On behalf of Pettai Jmaath, its vice-president Mohammed Kasim and others submitted a petition demanding the closure of the liquor shop functioning at Alagu Nagar on Pettai – Thiruppanikarisalkulam Junction. The students, women and the children, who had to cross this ‘danger zone’ every day to reach their educational institutions and the workplace was facing a serious threat from drunkards roaming around Alagu Nagar. “This is the third liquor shop opened in this area as nearby MGR Nagar and Pettai to Narasinganallur Road already have two liquor shops. Since this entire area houses more than 1,000 families, the Collector, considering the safety of women, children and senior citizens, should take steps for closing down the Alagu Nagar liquor shop immediately,” Mr. Mohammed Kasim said. Seeking basic infrastructure in their hamlet, a group of residents from Marakkudi village near Gangaikondan submitted a petition to the District Collector. The petitioner villagers carrying contaminated drinking water allegedly supplied to Marakkudi accused that the father-in-law of their woman panchayat president, who was discharging the duties of the panchayat president, was refusing to give permission for taking up any development work in their hamlet. Hence, the Collector should visit their hamlet to understand the condition of the village, they appealed.
