Competition time A number of educational institutions held inter-collegiate competitions showcasing the talents of students. Over 70 students from across the country participated in the inter-collegiate competition organised by the Department of Commerce (Self-Finance, Women) at Jamal Mohamed College recently. The team from Holy Cross College won the overall championship at the programme. The line-up of contests was designed to test the knowledge, analytical thinking, and practical skills of participants. At the ‘Inspire Fest 2K26’ hosted by Jamal Mohamed College of Teacher Education, over 135 students from 11 colleges participated in contests aimed at fostering creativity and intellectual engagement among future educators. Endowment lectures P. Nelson Raj, associate professor of English, Bishop Heber College, spoke on “The Science Behind the Study: Exploring Research Methodology” as part of the Rajeev Taranath Endowment Lecture organised by the PG and Research Department of English and the English Literary Association (ELA) of Jamal Mohamed College recently. In his address, Mr. Raj explained the importance of data collection and critical analysis in academic research. At the Diamond Jubilee Endowment Lecture hosted by PG and Research Department of Physics, National College, Aravindharaja Selvaraj, assistant professor of Physics, Gachon University, South Korea, delivered the endowment lecture on ‘Nano Materials for Energy Storage Techniques – Educational Opportunities in South Korea,’ and gave insights on higher education prospects in South Korea. Cancer awareness talks The role of personalised nutrition, lifestyle factors such as physical activity, stress management, and avoidance of harmful habits in cancer prevention, was the focus of special lectures organised on World Cancer Day recently. At the programme hosted by the Department of Home Science, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, M. K. Kousalya, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and Special Medical Officer, Kodumbalur PHC, Tiruchi, emphasised the role of individualised dietary and lifestyle modifications in reducing cancer risk and improving quality of life. In a World Cancer Day programme held at PRIST Deemed University, Vallam, Thanjavur, G. Govindaraj, surgical oncologist, Harshamitra Cancer Centre, Tiruchi and V. Sadhish Valavan, general surgeon and oral pathologist, spoke on the prevention and benefits of early detection in treating cancer. The speakers advised students to be rigorous in self-examination, and to undergo cancer screening tests in order to aid early medical intervention. Winning teams were awarded a total of ₹1 Lakh in prize money. In his inaugural address, S. Xavier Britto, chairman, K-Indev Logistics/XB Group, urged students to cultivate resilience and a long-term vision. K. Srinivasa Raju, managing director, Adyar Ananda Bhavan, emphasised customer-centric innovation in his talk. Besides lectures by experts in the field, a panel discussion on ‘Industry Perspectives on Building Investable Pitches: From Idea to Investment’ featured perspectives from industrial leaders. Biochemistry conference S.Rajendiran, Senior Scientist (Soil Science), ICAR-IIHR-Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Chettalli, Kodagu, Karnataka, spoke on the agricultural applications of biochemistry and job opportunities in farming, during a conference on exploring new frontiers in Life Science research and career innovation organised by the Department of Biochemistry of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College recently. The conference proceedings were released by Sam Annie Jeyachristy, assistant professor and head, Department of Medical Education, Royal College of Medicine Perak, University Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. NCC ceremony Lt. Dr. S. During the ceremony, Lt. Dr. S. Ithayamalar was formally conferred with the rank of Captain, marking a significant milestone in her service to the National Cadet Corps. The programme was conducted in the presence of Major Mini, Commanding Officer, 4 (TN) Girls Battalion, NCC and college principal M.V. Alli. Flying Officer M. Isai and Lt. Dr. G. Janani Jayalakshmi were also present. Cadets were felicitated for their outstanding achievements in various national-level camps.
