A digital luggage locker facility will soon be implemented at the Kozhikode railway station as part of modernising various services for passengers. The self-operated smart facility will be set up based on a contractual agreement near the existing cloakroom at platform number 4.

According to railway officials, a 30-sq ft space has already been earmarked for the project, which has already been implemented at several railway stations in Kerala as part of the modernisation schemes. Three types of lockers based on the volume of luggage will be available for the convenient use of passengers, they add.

“The passengers will be able to use the safety lockers independently using their mobile phone. Authentication will be done through a One-Time Password sent to the registered mobile number,” said a senior railway official at the Kozhikode station. The price for a medium sized locker will be ₹60 for six hours, while larger units with capacity to hold up to 10 bags will be available at ₹300 for 24-hours, he said.

The payments can be made using the QR code to be displayed on the locker screen. There will be 24×7 closed circuit television camera surveillance around the facility as an added security. There will also be a technical team to assist the passengers in case of any unexpected error or malfunctioning.

The project is implemented at Kozhikode railway station as part of expanding smart services to more areas. This digital solution is also expected to ease the burden on the conventional cloakroom service and provide passengers with a speedy and secure service meeting the modern requirements.

Railway sources said the five-year contract for the project was awarded six months ago, which would be installed within a week at the marked area. The existing manual cloakroom service will also be continued along with the digital one, they said.
