The Minions are returning to the big screen with a brand-new mission, and the first look arrived during the Super Bowl. Universal Pictures debuted a teaser spot during the game before releasing the full trailer online, officially unveiling the title of the next installment as Minions & Monsters.

The film marks the seventh entry in the long-running Despicable Me franchise and serves as a sequel to Minions: The Rise of Gru. Produced by Illumination, the new movie shifts the mischievous yellow characters into an unexpected setting: 1920s Hollywood. Rather than working under a supervillain mastermind, the Minions embark on an independent quest to create a monster movie of their own.

The trailer introduces a story in which the Minions search for terrifying creatures to star as villains in their film, leading them into encounters with a range of bizarre monsters. Among them are sea beasts, an oversized pink rabbit with a violent streak, and a mummy whose bandages are accidentally torn away during a chaotic confrontation.

Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin, a longtime creative force behind the franchise who also voices the Minions. The screenplay is written by Brian Lynch, who previously worked on both Minions films and The Secret Life of Pets. The movie is produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri alongside Bill Ryan.

The sequel follows the commercial success of Despicable Me 4, which debuted in 2024 and further extended the franchise’s dominance at the box office. Since launching in 2010 with Despicable Me, the series has generated more than $5 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time.

Minions & Monsters is scheduled to arrive in theatres on July 1.
