The capital welcomed the New Year with vibrant lighting and floral arrangements at the Kanakakkunnu Palace grounds. Milling crowds were witnessed at Vasantholsavam, as well as the annual Light Festival, organised by the State Tourism department and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in collaboration with government and private institutions, showcasing 35,000 flowering pots arranged across the venue. Entry to the event is priced at ₹50 for adults and ₹30 for children. Crowds began arriving early in the evening in anticipation of the New Year. The turnout at the palace grounds largely comprised families and children. However, youth participation at the venue was comparatively low. Police personnel were deployed across the area to regulate traffic and ensure the safety of visitors. No traffic restrictions were imposed, a senior police officer said, adding that the turnout was lower than on previous days. Traffic was slow but managed efficiently by the police. “It is mainly the lighting that attracted me to spend the evening here,” said Rania from Kollam. Vaishak, a student, said that he wished to celebrate the New Year at Manaveeyam Veedhi. Other parts of the city also witnessed large crowds. Shanghumugham beach and Lulu Mall saw a steady flow of visitors as people gathered to welcome the New Year, with the mall hosting a variety of musical events.
