The Mangaluru East Police have registered a case against a group of residents of Barebailu and Vyasanagar on the charge of obstructing NHAI work while closing the median opening on National Highway 66 near SKS Planet apartment, KPT Junction, on February 4, Wednesday.

In a complaint, NHAI Mangaluru Office project director Abdulla Javed Azmi said there were complaints and reports about road accidents at the same median opening. Hence, a decision was taken to close the median opening. NHAI had asked its agency, Mugrodi Constructions, to do the civil work, which began on February 3.

On the night of February 4, Mr. Azmi had gone to the spot to give instructions to the workers of the agency. A group of residents unlawfully assembled at the spot and prevented him from discharging his official duty. The residents also stopped the agency personnel from carrying out the work.

On the complaint by Mr. Azmi in the early hours of February 5, the police registered a case punishable under Sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 189 (2) (unlawful assembly), 190, 191(2) (Rioting) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Residents Pramod Ballalbagh, Umesh Shetty, Praveen Kumar, and Santosh Kumar Barebailu were named as accused.
