Cyber Crime police record 117 cases in January alone, arrest 37 from 7 States

The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad registered 117 cases in January 2026 and arrested 37 people from seven states during special operations.

An officer from the wing said that out of the total, 26 cases were registered in Hyderabad. The cases spanned Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar and Delhi.

The offences detected during the month included investment fraud, digital arrest, social media related crimes involving child sexual abuse material, business fraud, gaming fraud and job fraud. Police also said that over ₹71,91,371 was refunded to the victims.

Besides, 26 mobile phones, one laptop, 57 cheque books, 79 SIM cards, 62 debit cards, 15 Shell stamps and eight QR code scanners, were seized

Police also said that zonal cyber cells received 1,706 complaints through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal in January. Of these, 315 cases were registered, an increase attributed to the C MITRA initiative. Thirteen people were arrested in 13 cases across India by zonal cyber cells, and ₹10,65,003 was refunded to victims.

Detailing a major investment fraud case, police said a Hyderabad resident was cheated after being lured into a fake crypto trading scheme through a matrimonial website. The fraud involved a bogus trading platform and resulted in a loss of over ₹11 lakh. Two accused from Gajuwaka in Andhra Pradesh were arrested in the case, and five mobile phones and 10 SIM cards were seized.

Citizens were advised to report cyber frauds immediately by calling the national helpline 1930 or through the cyber crime reporting portal, stating that prompt reporting improves the chances of freezing accounts and recovering money.
