Man held for sexual assault of differently abled woman near Vedaranyam

A 30-year-old man on Saturday was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a differently abled woman near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district.

Police identified the accused as Suresh, 30, a resident of Subramaniyankadu in Thagattur. He is married and has two daughters.

Police sources said the victim was a 21-year-old woman from the Scheduled Caste and the daughter of an agricultural labourer from a village under Vaimedu police limits. She suffered from a growth disorder..

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the victim was alone at home while her parents were away at work. Suresh, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, entered the house and sexually assaulted the woman. The victim is undergoing medical treatment.

Upon receiving information, Tiruvarur SP Karun Garad, who was in-charge for Nagapattinam on Friday, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Saravanan visited the spot and conducted preliminary inquiry.

Inspector Nagarathinam of Vedaranyam All Women Police Station registered a case under the SC/ST PoA Act and arrested Suresh on Saturday. He was subsequently produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
