A Shivamogga court, on Friday, convicted two people facing charges of assaulting a police official while on duty and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment, in addition to imposing a penalty on them. Manu Kumar, 23, and Madhu Kumar, 24, brothers from Mandaghatta in Shivamogga taluk, assaulted Police Sub-Inspector Naveen Mathpathi and his staff members from the Kumsi Police Station when they went to the accused’s house to seize ganja in 2020. The Police Sub-Inspector filed a complaint against the brothers, accusing them of assaulting him and obstructing him from discharging his duties. Sanjeev Kumar, the then Dy. SP of Shivamogga conducted the investigation and filed the charge sheet. The Third Additional District and Sessions Judge heard the case, convicted the accused, and sentenced them to two years’ imprisonment. They were also slapped with a penalty of ₹17,500 each. Furthermore, the court ordered a compensation of ₹20,000 for the complainant and another ₹10,000 for the witness in the case.
