The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation to maintain civic infrastructure in the Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates. Under the MoU, the GCC will maintain roads, streetlights, high mast lights and storm-water drains, and handle solid waste management in both estates. Ambattur has 128 roads with a total length of 41.38 km, while Guindy has 82 roads measuring 15.28 km, according to a press release. The Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates, major industrial hubs in Chennai, accommodate a large number of manufacturing and allied units and employing a significant workforce. The Ambattur industrial estate was developed over 1,167 acres, while the Guindy industrial estate spans 404.08 acres. As of now, the Chennai Corporation administers an area of 426 sq. km and removes an average of 6,300 metric tonnes of solid waste every day, apart from 1,000 metric tonnes of construction waste; maintains roads, stormwater drains, water channels, streetlights, bridges, community halls, parks, ponds, playgrounds, gymnasiums, schools and hospitals, and for providing civic, education and healthcare services, the release added.
