A leopard and a cub were found dead under suspicious circumstances near Manjacombai in the Nilgiris forest division on Friday. Officials said that a postmortem was conducted on the remains of the animals, and that samples of the animals’ visceral organs were collected and sent for forensic analysis to ascertain the exact cause of death. Officials from the division said that they had noticed that the remains had been scavenged on, and believe that the leopardess could have died in a fight with another carnivore or with a pack of wild dogs. However, they did not rule out anthropogenic factors being behind the cause of death of the animals. Further investigations are ongoing.
