At least 12 makeshift sheds in Parappana Agrahara in southeastern Bengaluru, occupied by daily wage workers, were damaged in an accidental fire on Friday morning, police said. No casualties were reported.

The settlement had about 55 sheds, of which 12 were completely gutted, police said.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m., when the occupants were sleeping. The flames were first noticed outside the sheds, prompting the residents to rush out. Initially, they attempted to douse the fire themselves, but it quickly spread to more sheds. They later alerted the police and the fire department.

Four fire tenders were pressed into the situation, and the flames were brought under control after a three-hour operation.

“The labourers had lit a campfire to ward off the cold at night, but did not put out the fire before going to sleep. In the early hours, the flames spread due to strong winds and eventually swept through the settlement,” an officer said.
