The Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, in association with The Hindu, has launched the ‘Biotechnology: Role in Industry 5.0 – Sustainable Future Pathways’ initiative to examine the expanding role of biotechnology in an Industry 5.0 landscape that emphasises human-centric innovation, sustainability, and technological integration.

As biotechnology continues to drive advances across healthcare, agriculture, environmental solutions, and research-led innovation, the initiative seeks to create wider awareness of its societal impact while positioning it as a dynamic and future-ready career domain.

As part of this ongoing initiative, the second webinar in the series, titled “Biotechnology Education: Skills & Opportunities for a Sustainable Future”, will focus on how education and skill development in biotechnology are evolving to meet these emerging demands.

The second webinar will be held on February 8, 2026 from 11.30 a.m. onwards. The session will bring together experts from academia, international education, and research to discuss how biotechnology education is evolving to meet the demands of a sustainable and innovation-led future.

The webinar will feature G. Jayaraman, professor and dean, School of Bio Sciences and Technology, VIT Chennai; Pooja Shivanand Breh, Environmental and Life Sciences Programme, Faculty of Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei; K. S. Nagabhushana, Director – Research, Prayoga Institute of Education Research, Bengaluru; and Jayanthi Velayudhan, Project Post Doctoral Fellow and alumni, VIT. The discussion will be moderated by Soma Basu, journalist.

The discussion will focus on the skills and competencies required for future biotechnology professionals, the alignment of academic curricula with industry and sustainability goals, interdisciplinary learning pathways, and opportunities in research and higher education at the national and global levels. Drawing from diverse perspectives, the session aims to provide participants with a clearer understanding of how biotechnology education can enable meaningful careers while addressing real-world challenges.
