The last day for receipt of filled in applications for conferment of degrees of Bharathiar University during the 40th Convocation ceremony on February 14 ended on Thursday. The university had stated in its notification issued by Registrar R. Rajavel on January 7 that candidates who had obtained provisional certificates through affiliated colleges/ university departments, school of distance education/ Open and Distance Learning/ Online Learning, and CPP (Centre for Participatory Programmes) / CCII (Centre for Collaboration of Industries and Institutions) are eligible to apply. Candidates, who had completed UG/PG degree with first rank in April/May 2025 examinations through affiliated colleges (non-autonomous), are to be given certificates. Candidates, who had completed D.Sc., D.Litt., and Ph.D., Viva Voce from October 1, 2024 to January 30, 2026, have also been instructed to apply for the Convocation. The 40th convocation is set be conducted without a Vice-Chancellor for the third time in a row. After the three-year tenure the last Vice-Chancellor P. Kaliraj ended during October, 2022, BU has been administered by a three-member Convenor Committee headed by the State Education Secretary. The university will start issuing the invitations for the convocation after handing it over first to State Education Minister Govi Chezhiyaan in the coming days, it is learnt. The invitation is to be given against the backdrop of the Minister skipping the convocation ceremonies at Anna University and Periyar University in recent days. The Minister had also kept away from the 167th Convocation of the University of Madras on January 22, due to a face-off with the Governor over appointment of Vice-Chancellors. The Governor had stood his ground on inclusion of UGC Chairperson’s nominee in the search committees for recommending names for appointment of Vice-Chancellors in Bharathiar, Bharathidasan and Periyar universities, citing Supreme Court’s directive that the UGC norms override conflicting State enactments. The latest development is the directive issued by the Supreme Court to the Madras High Court for resolving Tamil Nadu’s laws on Vice-Chancellor appointments within six months.
