The city police on Thursday arrested six youths, including a degree student of a city college, on the charges of drug trafficking.

Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy told reporters that two persons, including the degree student, were arrested and 3.5 grams of MDMA synthetic narcotic drug was seized from them by the Ullal police. The Mulky police arrested two more persons and seized 15 grams of MDMA from the accused.

The Konaje police arrested two other persons and seized the vehicle in which they were transporting 80 kg of cannabis from Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Reddy said, as part of ongoing ‘Mane Mane’ policing campaign, police, during their visit to houses, are asking people to report about drug consumption and the sale in their areas. Pamphlets containing “QR code”, for sharing information with police, are being distributed. These pamphlets will also be distributed to gram panchayats around Mangaluru.

Though most colleges are sharing information related to drugs with the police, there are still a few institutions that are reluctant to share information. “If we find any student involved in drug peddling, then the police will visit the institution concerned,” Mr. Reddy said.

During night patrolling, the city police are carrying a handheld device and taking thumb impression of suspects. This is being done to keep a vigil on movement of accused in the night. The device sends the fingerprints for verification on database of the state police. “Recently we found two accused, who were wanted in some crimes, in this way and arrested them,” Mr. Reddy said.
