The IV Town Police (crime wing) successfully solved a high-value gold theft case within hours of the report, on Thursday. The teams apprehended two seasoned property offenders and recovered 280 grams of gold ornaments valued at ₹28 lakh. The arrested individuals were identified as Mekala Ganga (30) of Kothavalasa, Vizianagaram, and R. Yellaramma (44) of K. Kotapadu in Anakapalli. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (crimes) Latha Madhuri, said: “On February 3, V. Jyothi of B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district was travelling with her mother to Srikakulam. They arrived at Visakhapatnam railway station via the Ratnachal Express at 12:30 p.m. and took a shared auto-rickshaw from the railway station to the RTC Complex. After reaching their destination, the next day, they found the gold ornaments which were secured in their bag missing. They suspected the two women who were travelling in the shared auto-rickshaw and had alighted near Sangam Sarath Theatre to have stolen it.” On Thursday (February 5), the complainant’s husband alerted the police via ‘Dial 112’ at 10.00 a.m. The IV Town police responded immediately and registered a case. Following the directions from Commissioner of Police, Shankabratha Bagchi, the teams launched an intensive search and carried out vehicle checks. By 3 p.m., the police arrested the two accused women.
