Getting education is women’s real source of strength, says panel chief

Karnataka State Commission for Women Chairperson Nagalakshmi Choudhari on Thursday stressed that education is the greatest source of strength for women and the most reliable guide to a successful and meaningful life.

She was speaking at an interaction programme with college students organised at the auditorium of the district administration building in Koppal.

The programme was jointly organised by the Karnataka State Commission for Women, the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, the Police Department and the Department of Women and Child Development.

Quoting from the adage, “Knowledge is life and ignorance is death”, Dr. Choudhari said that education alone enables individuals to understand the world, their rights, duties and responsibilities.

“Every woman must be educated. Education should be used as a tool of empowerment. During the student years, girls should avoid unnecessary distractions and temptations, focus on learning and work hard to achieve success. There are no shortcuts to success. Dedication and perseverance are the only mantras,” she said.

Cautioning students about the misuse of social media, she said that platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and reels have become highly attractive across age groups.

“Women are often emotionally vulnerable. Fraudsters exploit social media to trap innocent girls and women, at times leading to blackmail and severe consequences, including loss of life,” she warned.

She advised students to be extremely cautious online, avoid accepting friendship requests from strangers and refrain from unnecessary contact with unknown persons.

Dr. Choudhari urged students to use the power of the internet and social media positively for education and career development. In case of cyber fraud, she advised them to contact the cyber helpline 1930, the child helpline 1098 or the police emergency number 112 for immediate assistance.

She also highlighted the importance of understanding the Constitution.

“The Constitution grants us rights, but many lack awareness of how to exercise them. Everyone must know their rights and have the courage to protest against injustice,” she said.

Referring to various government welfare schemes, she encouraged students to be informed about them and approach the departments concerned to avail themselves of benefits.

“For government schemes to succeed, beneficiaries must also act responsibly and ensure proper utilisation,” she added.

Students from different parts of the district interacted with the chairperson and submitted complaints regarding the lack of basic infrastructure in their villages and colleges.

Responding to these concerns, Dr. Choudhari directed the officials concerned to take appropriate action.

Deputy Commissioner Suresh B. Itnal, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Varnit Negi, Superintendent of Police Ram L. Arasiddi, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Parashuram Y. Shetteppanavar, Deputy Director of Pre-University Education Jagadish, along with other district-level officers, college lecturers and students were present.
