With focused efforts towards effective investigation and successful prosecution of grave crimes, police in South Zone have secured series of significant convictions in January.

This included convictions in offences like murder, robbery and crime against women and children.

In a statement, Inspector General of Police (South Zone), Vijayendra Bidari, said that the police have got conviction in as many as 10 murder cases across the zone and Theni district alone recorded convictions in four cases.

As many as 20 accused were convicted and out of them 18 were awarded life imprisonment. One of them got a double life sentence.

Crime cases

The courts also convicted the accused in four robbery cases, including imprisonment of eight persons in Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Thoothukudi districts. Three grave house-breaking cases also ended in conviction, with 12 accused persons punished.

“These outcomes reflect meticulous investigation, close coordination with prosecution, and continuous supervisory monitoring across districts,” Mr. Bidari said.

Crime against women and children

The police also got convictions in 23 cases relating to crime against women and children, including one rape case and 22 POCSO cases. In total, 25 persons were punished by the courts.

Courts awarded the death sentence in two cases and life imprisonment in four cases.

“The convictions would also strengthen deterrence against serious offences through focused law enforcement action,” the IG said.

Recently, the police in southern districts hav formed case officer scheme. Under this scheme, all Superintendents of Police have identified key grave cases for close monitoring, ensuring timely service of summons for attendance of witnesses, and effective support to prosecutors.

The IG said that focused efforts would be made to closely follow up trials in cases involving habitual offenders to ensure effective prosecution.
