Meeting a long felt-need, the State Highways Department has started work on widening the Nagapattinam-Gudalur Road in Tiruvarur town.

The two-lane road would be widened into a four-lane road at an estimated cost of ₹14.06 crore sanctioned under the Integrated Road Infrastructure Development Scheme.

The widening of the nearly 1.4-km road section would benefit travellers on the Thanjavur-Nagapattinam section, said Collector V. Mohanachandran, who inaugurated the work along with MLA Poondi K. Kalaivannan on Wednesday.

The project would entail the widening of two minor bridges, reconstruction of another minor bridge, construction of crash barriers for about 620 metres and road median on the stretch. The work would be completed within eight months, Mr. Mohanachandran said.

B. Kalaivani, District Revenue Officer, S. Bhuvanapriya, Tiruvarur Municipal Chairperson, Balasubramanian, Superintending Engineer Veerapan, Divisional Engineer, Highways, and other officials were present.
